Sleep and Longevity: Why Seven Hours Matter
Educational information on evidence, limitations and individualized decisions.
How much sleep do adults need?
Most adults need roughly 7 to 9 hours per night. Individual needs vary, and sleep quality and regularity also matter.
Does short sleep subtract years of life?
Habitually insufficient sleep is associated with higher risks of several health problems, but a fixed number of life-years cannot be assigned to a short night.
What habits help?
Keep a consistent schedule, limit late caffeine, maintain a dark quiet environment and seek assessment for severe snoring, excessive sleepiness or persistent insomnia.
