Hydration: Do You Need Salt and Lemon in Water?
Educational information on evidence, limitations and individualized decisions.
Does everyone need one liter with one gram of salt daily?
No. Adding sea salt is not a universal recommendation. One gram of salt contains approximately 400 mg of sodium, in addition to dietary sodium.
When might electrolytes matter?
Sodium replacement can be relevant during prolonged heavy sweating, intense heat or gastrointestinal fluid loss, depending on clinical circumstances.
Who should be cautious?
People with hypertension, kidney or heart disease, sodium restrictions or medications affecting fluid balance need individualized advice. Lemon adds flavor; it does not make salt necessary.
